Umbreon

Umbreon

By: Legacy

Probably the most popular of all the Eevee-lutions thanks to its impressive defensive stats and diverse movepool, Umbreon can find a place in a number of teams and is a personal favourite of mine.

4th Generation

Baton Passer

Item: Leftovers
Nature: Calm
EVs: 252 HP, 252 SPDEF, 6 DEF
Attacks: Baton Pass
Mean Look
Wish
Toxic

This is probably the standard Umbreon moveset. First trap a Pokémon with Mean Look, poison it with Toxic if possible and then Baton Pass to a Pokémon to finish off the foe, using Wish before Baton Passing if the Pokémon you're switching is in need of an HP boost. Umbreon's strong defensive stats mean that it can be switched in quite often to trap an opponent and then switch to a good counter, making it quite useful in a lot of situations. Unfortunately, since the physical/special attack split in D/P, this strategy isn't quite as sturdy as it once was.

Surprise Attacker

Item: Leftovers
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 HP, 152 SPATK, 100 DEF
Attacks: Dark Pulse
Toxic
Moonlight
Psychic

This is pretty much only a novelty set. The thinking behind it is that your opponent is expecting the standard set listed above and brings out a Bug or Fighting Pokémon to counter and is, thus, caught by surprise to be hit with an, albeit weak, Psychic attack. Dark Pulse is there as its strongest STAB attack and Toxic is kept for annoyance purposes. The saving grace about this set is that it has a lot of staying power thanks to Umbreon's defenses, the EVs given and Moonlight to heal HP. So, bringing this Umbreon into play late game, when the opponent's big sweepers have likely been taken down or at least weakened, will be a surprising threat to your opponent, especially if you land a Toxic on them. Then all you have to do is chip at their HP and heal with Moonlight every so often, whilst watching their Pokémon slowly die of poison.

Nuisance

Item: Leftovers
Nature: Calm
EVs: 252 HP, 200 DEF
Attacks: Mean Look
Toxic
Charm
Moonlight

This is the set I use, and I think I'm pretty much one of the few. In fact, I have never seen any other person use this set, or even seen it listed before I started using it. This set is extremely fun to use because you can almost picture your opponent banging their head against the wall in frustration at it, and I've had so many people disconnect from Wifi games when facing my Umbreon (nicknamed 'Nuisance', hence the name of this set).

You can use Umbreon as your starter, and just pray that your opponent doesn't lead with Steel Pokémon, Heracross or another really strong Fighting Pokémon. If they don't, Umbreon can have a field day. Odds are, your opponent will expect you to trap their Pokémon with Mean Look, so they'll try to anticipate that by switching in their fighting Pokémon, which is why you'll lead with Charm, to greatly lower their attack power. I usually hit them with Charm again to completely cripple their attack, causing even the strongest physical attacker to do only meagre damage to Umbreon. Then, if they're too stupid to switch, you trap them with Mean Look, poison them with Toxic and then just keep healing with Moonlight and stalling with Charm until they slowly die. And you keep repeating this strategy until Umbreon finally falls.

I have actually taken out five Pokémon with this strategy in one game, so it definitely does work. Though, I decided not to lead with it so that I didn't have to immediately switch it out should it face a Steel or Poison Pokémon (who can't be poisoned, rendering this set completely useless) or Heracross, who, whilst not OHKOing, will do too much damage on its first attack for Umbreon to be able to recover and enact its strategy.
