The wind violently thrashes across an open field, as an injured Misty slowly rises to her feet to face off against an atrocious Gyarados. Suddenly Misty realizes that Gyarados is about to do one of its more devastating attack, Hydro Pump, so she warns her Staryu to get out of the way, but it's too late. The Hydro Pump hits Staryu with such impact that it's knocked backwards a few feet and is unable to move.

Misty is infuriated and is about to attack, when Red approaches her from behind and offers to help her fend off the raging Gyarados. Misty warns Red to stay back because this could be an extremely volatile situation. Red doesn't listen and after a brief introduction, sends out his Bulbasaur to help. Misty is surprised that Red is a Pokemon trainer as well. Gyarados tries another Hydro Pump, but Bulbasaur seems to be refreshed, instead of devastated. Red now gets his counter attack into motion with a Bulbasaur Leech Seed on Gyarados. While Gyarados struggles to free itself from the attack, Misty gets Staryu to use Recover and heal its wounds. Red and Misty agree to double team against Gyarados. Bulbasaur executes Vine Whip, while Staryu does Bubblebeam. This has Gyarados reeling, so Red throws a Poke Ball at it. The Poke Ball wiggles around for a few tense seconds, before Red has himself a new Pokemon, Gyarados.

Misty thanks Red for saving her life and stopping the raging Gyarados from hurting her Staryu. Red says that he didn't expect to see a wild Gyarados just outside of Pewter City. Misty reluctantly reveals that Gyarados isn't actually wild; it's actually her Pokemon. Misty tells Red that she was raising Gyarados, until somebody stole it last week and when it came back, it wasn't the nice Pokemon she knew. She has been following its path of destruction ever since she let it out of its Poke Ball.

Misty thanks Red once again for his help and is about to leave, when Red says that he wants to help her find the individuals responsible for making her Gyarados go berserk. Red asks Misty if she knows where to find the Poke-thieves, but she says that if she knew, she would be there. That gives Red the idea to go see Professor Oak and ask him if he knows anything.

Inside the local Pokemon Center, Red is talking to Professor Oak through the PC. After a brief greeting, Oak asks Red how is Pokedex is going. Red shows him that he got some new data today, and shows the entry for Gyarados. Red explains to Misty that a Pokedex automatically enters the data, whenever he catches a Pokemon.

After a brief rant about hopefully becoming the world's greatest trainer one day, Red tells Oak about how Misty's Gyarados was stolen and now it won't listen to its trainer anymore. Oak says that it sounds like the evil-doings of Team Rocket, a secret society of using Pokemon for evil purposes. He says that there's been a rumor that recently they've been conducting lab experiments on stolen Pokemon. This startles and upsets both Red and Misty. However, Oak says that that there's something they can do to help. He tells them about Mount Moon, where the Moon Stone is found. Team Rocket is after the Moon Stone because it has the ability to boost the power of a Pokemon enormously.

After storming out of the Pokemon Center, Red vows that his plans of completing his Pokedex can be put on hold for now, since he wants to defeat Team Rocket first. Misty tells Red that she's going with him, since Mount Moon is on the way to her hometown, Cerulean City. And if she goes with him, they're bound to run into a lot of trainers that she knows and be able to get some valuable information on Team Rocket as well.

Red warns Misty of the imminent danger ahead, but Misty shows off the arsenal of Water Pokemon she possesses. She explains that the mountains are full of Rock Pokemon, so she'll be able to hold her own just fine. Misty extends her hand in a friendly introduction, which Red reluctantly accepts, as they head east in search of Team Rocket and their next destination, Mount Moon.
