Catching Pokemon Easier

If you're going to have a powerful team of Pokemon, you're going to first have to master the art of catching Pokemon in the wild. For weak and low level Pokemon like Starly, you can lower its HP before throwing a Poke Ball at it to catch it, but for Legendary Pokemon like Dialga or Palkia, you're going to have to have a sound strategy in place before the battle.

Before explaining strategies to make Pokemon easier to catch, I'll explain how the game determines your chances of catching a Pokemon when a certain Poke Ball is thrown. Below is the formula used to determine if you catch a certain Pokemon.

Catch = ((( 3 * Max HP - 2 * Current HP ) * Catch Rate * Poke Ball Bonus ) / ( 3 * Max HP )) * Status Condition Bonus

Bullet Catch - A decimal number out of one (that can be expressed as a percentage) that represents your chances of catching the Pokemon
Bullet Max HP - The amount of HP the Pokemon has at full health (the lower the HP, the easier it is to catch the Pokemon)
Bullet Current HP - The HP the Pokemon has when the Poke Ball is thrown (the lower the HP, the easier it is to catch the Pokemon)
Bullet Catch Rate - The Catch Rate of the Pokemon (each Pokemon has a different Catch Rate; the higher the Catch Rate, the easier it is to catch the Pokemon)
Bullet Poke Ball Bonus - The multiplier the Poke Ball uses (the higher the multiplier, the easier it is to catch the Pokemon)
Bullet Status Condition Bonus - The multiplier for any status condition the Pokemon has (2 for sleep and freeze and 1.5 for paralyze, poison, and burn; the higher the multipler, the easier it is to catch the Pokemon)

Below are some tips to help make catching Pokemon easier in 4th Generation Pokemon games.

Hit Points (HP)

As you probably already know, the lower the HP, the easier it is to catch a certain Pokemon. Essentially, you're trying to get a wild Pokemon's HP the lowest possible without knocking it out. This has been made easier in the 4th Generation due to TM54 False Swipe. First introduced in the 2nd Generation, this attack may only have a base power of 40, but it's the perfect attack for capturing Pokemon since it will always leave a Pokemon with 1 HP remaining. Many Pokemon such as Scyther even learn it from leveling up.

Another interesting thing is that Pokemon with higher maximum HP like Chansey are easier to catch when their HP is lowered to 1 HP, even if their Catch Rates are lower. This is due to the abovementioned formula.

Status Condition

As mentioned above, each status condition is given a certain weight. The higher the number, the easier it is to catch the Pokemon. Due to the status condition value being on the outside of the equation, it is given a heavy weight in determining if you catch a certain Pokemon. Since inflicting the Frozen condition is purely by luck, I would recommend putting your opponent to Sleep with an attack like Spore or Hypnosis. You can Paralyze or Burn your opponent, but it won't have as great of an effect on if you catch the Pokemon or not.

Poke Ball

The last key to the formula is the Poke Ball used to capture the Pokemon. As you probably know, Poke Balls like the Ultra Ball have a better chance of capturing a Pokemon than the Great Ball. However, don't ignore the Poke Balls that have been introduced since the first Generation, such as the Dive Ball and the Dusk Ball, since they come in handy in certain situations and can easily be the determining factor if you catch a certain Pokemon or not.

Legendary Pokemon

Legendary Pokemon have a Catch Rate of 3 making them the hardest Pokemon to catch. Since you don't have an unlimited supply of Master Balls, you're going to have to use some strategy in order to catch the Pokemon. With a multiplier of 2, Ultra Balls are all right for catching Pokemon, however, at Money1,200 there are better deals out there. Ultra Balls can be bought at any Poke Mart after five badges have been obtained.

If it's nighttime or you're battling in a dark area, I would recommend using the Dusk Ball since it's only Money1,000 and it has a multiplier of 4. The Dusk Ball can be acquired in Oreburgh City, Solaceon Town, and in select Poke Marts.

Since battles with Legendary Pokemon may take a while, another great option is the Timer Ball. How this Poke Ball works is for every ten turns in battle, the Poke Ball multiplier goes up by 1 times. When more than 30 turns have passed, the Timer Ball's multiplier maxes out at 4 times. Since this may take a while, I only recommend using the Timer Ball if the conditions for the Dusk Ball cannot be met. For Money1,000, the Timer Ball can be obtained from select Poke Marts throughout Sinnoh and in Solaceon Town.

Conclusion

Now that you understand all the fundamentals of the formula, I'll explain the results of the formula. Catch is equal to a decimal number out of 1 or a percent - the higher the percent, the better chances of catching the Pokemon. If a Catch is above 1, then you should capture the Pokemon on your first try. Now that you know the basics of catching Pokemon, remember to take all the factors into account next time you attemp to catch a powerful Pokemon.
