View Full Version : When is a Pokemon considered a legendary?

So, I've been thinking about this: What are the conditions that have to be met for a Pokemon to be a legendary?

Stats might play a part, as legendary Pokemon have very high base stats.
But some Pokemon like Aggron, for example, have high stats too; not as high as legendaries, but still high. (530 points in total)

But I am not looking for a stats-based answer. I want more reasons. If you have any, please share them here.

The word legend doesn't mean over-powered. Legend stands for myth and rarity, for example, Manaphy is considered as a legendary because it is very rare, though not powerful at all. However, some legendaries are so powerful and that's why they are considered as Ubers.

That's only my thought though...

Well, Phione is fairly common and is still considered a legendary?

Yet isn't as common as other pokemon, and the only way to get it is to get Manaphy.

However, Feebas and Munchlax are much rarer than, let's say, Dialga, as Dialga is found for sure in Diamond/Platinum, in the same place, and can be caught. Feebas, on the other hand, is very rare in that few people actually get to encounter and catch it.
What do you think about this?

I am not talking about the game, but the anime and the movie itself.
According to the original myths, Dialga is so rare to be seen and has only be seen by the ancient people, and therefore, all the legendaries are the same. However, the rest are considered in the anime/movie to be normal.

This is a nice thread. Something that I am sure many people have thought about before.

The way I see it is, most Pokemon that are considered Legendary can do things that other Pokemon cannot. Or has done remarkable things before thus killing off most of the others.

For example, Latias and Latios sacrificed themselves countless times to save the human race.

Suicune can purify water, Celebi can go back in time, Jirachi can grant wishes, Ho-Oh has transformed three Pokemon that were in a burning tower and helped them to survive, etc...

Even though some Pokemon such as Shaymin and Phione have been breaking the rules of there only being ONE of each Legendary Pokemon existing in the movies, they have their own reasons for being considered Legendary.

I can say more, but I'd rather see what you, Shadow or anyone else has to say about what I've just stated.

You're actually right, Neo.
However, even without having a look at the legendary Pokemon, I am certain there are exceptions; some legendary Pokemon that do not have any special power that makes them different from other Pokemon.
Or there isn't?

Another example of a "legendary" Pokémon (in the games under the rarity definition) could be Castform. Then again, maybe even Eevee could be considered legendary, but it is able to breed.
