I ask this mainly because of an upcoming Pokezam project called ZamFights; how complex should a battling system be? What factors should it involve, and which aren't really necessary.
For example, should Pokemon have IVs, or should level gain always be the same. Also, should Pokemon refuse to attack based on Happiness?

I think that IVs aren't really necessary, since they make the game more complex. If an IV counter or something like that is added, then IVs are OK.
As to the happiness thingie, suppose you just caught a wild pokemon, and want to train it. Of course, at first it won't be happy, so would you want it to be stubborn and not attack? No way. I don't think that is a good idea.

IV's should be removed or maxed out.

What's an IV?
And happiness should not be factored because there is too much involved in making a pokemon happy.
The system should be a a traditional menu(Like that in the GBC games) and easy to navigate.
Level gain should be experience-based, with experience being gained based on how tough the opponent is. There could be a few items that increase the xp points.

What's an IV?
An IV is random number between 0 and 31 that partially determines a Pokemon's stats, however early in the game this is very unapparent. At level 100 or so it can definitely result in altered stats. Because of this, Pokemon with low IVs, such as all 0, will be very weak to those with high IVs, such as 31.

IVs are unnecessary coding in my opinion. The time used to program them could be much better invested.
