The PS3 has been out for around 3 years, and they still can't do backwards compatibility. Why can't they just create a virtual machine and release it as a firmware update? The PS3 can definitely handle it, and there will be no copyright disputes since they own all the software. They could easily use one of Linux's open source virtual machines as a basis for their full model since it's 100% free.

That process would make sense, actually, and Nintendo has shown it to be a wealthy maneuver. And, the PS3 is plenty powerful, being in fact able to double as a full-fledged computer capable of running many advanced Linux distributions.
