View Full Version : Preferred Operating System

Which operating systems do you use and which do you prefer? Obviously there are various out there, and while most people prefer Windows, Linux is also fairly popular in various different countries.
I myself use Ubuntu 9.10, as its easy to use, fast, and reliable. I also use Debian 9 on a very old computer.
On both of those machines I used to use Windows Vista and Windows XP, however Vista was too slow for me and XP was absolute crap on the machine. It literally would have to blue screen twice-dailly due to the inability to handle the 512MB of ram the computer had (which actually, for XP, isn't half bad).
But what about everybody else. What OSes do you prefer and why do you prefer them? Have you ever tried anything that you think is good or would advise against?

Well, OpenOffice.org is never installed on a Windows machine by default, partially due to licensing constraints by that of Windows. From my experience they usually give you MSWorks and a Trial of MSOffice, though this varies. Do you have the MSOffice disks? Also, did you or someone else install OpenOffice onto it?
Additionally, I can't afford pricey software, so I use free alternatives to products like MSWindows, MSOffice, AdobeDreamweaver, and AdobePhotoshop. Unfortunately, I am still trying to find a good alternative to Quicken.

Lol as I remember you need to pay for a Photoshop license.
Though not me, Rapidshare ftw

Rapidshare is good for a lot, but I generally don't try to download huge software suites with it. The companies always make you pay with certain things they code in.

I've got Camtasia Studio and Photoshop CS3, both fully optional via Rapidshare.
I need Camtasia studios since I'm a "Let's Play" Youtuber, if you know what that is.

Not a clue, actually. Need to make a note to look it up later.

I guess it's someone who takes videos of themselves on computer games.
Mine is Windows Vista. But if I need to download something on limewire or some other risky thing(Viruses, ftw), or just in the mood for exploring, I use Linux.

XP was terrible until they came out with SP2. If I really needed a very stable environment, I would use XPSP2. I need to get a copy with SP3 to see how it works, though.

Yeah, Linux can be useful for dealing with risky files. Mac and Linux both, really, but Linux still stands at the top.

WinXP is definitely stable and really very well rounded. I'm assuming that Win7 will pretty much be to XP what Vista was to ME.

Despite popular belief, the basic versions of vista are very stable. They could be better, but they're still up near the top.

Well, yes and no. SP1 did improve stability greatly, and after a couple hundred other driver updates, it will run pretty smoothly. And, personally, I actually do like Vista more than XP, however XP still remains, after three service packs and 7 years of updates, the most stable of the Wins. Just logical, really.

I'm not talking about SP1. Just the regular version is stable. At least for me it is.
I had my first crash a few weeks ago after the two years I had it. With my XP, I crashed every few weeks.

Well, probably because of being unsupported drivers on XP then :P
I had a similar problem trying to install XP on a computer preloaded with Vista - XP couldn't even recognize the harddrive, making it impossible to install.

That's because XP sucks :3
