Discussion on Paul

So lately I've been thinking a lot about Paul. He's an interesting character, no? He's really the only "mean" trainer we've seen since Damian from season 1, if anyone even remembers him. So, let's have a nice talk about him.

Here's a couple questions to start us off:

Why is he so depressed? He always looks down about something. Something in his past, maybe?

Why does he treat his pokemon so badly? Does he really think they'll become stronger that way, or is does he have an ulterior motive?

Do you think he's a good rival for Ash? I mean, his other rivals since Gary haven't been that great...

Well Paul's "training method" hasn't really worked fantastically well yet but it hasn't worked too bad either. As you might have seen, Paul's strongest pokemon (or so he claims) is his Torterra, which he evolved from his first ever pokemon a Turtwig. Paul's traveled to the Kanto, Johto and Houen regions and competed in the leagues over there but has never won. In his match against Cynthia, his Torterra well, was very lackluster. Yes it was the only pokemon which ever did some damage to Garchomp on Paul's side however Torterra fainted in one hit to Brick Break. Plus noticibly his Weavile which had the best match up against Garchomp didn't make much of an impression either.

Well witt the negatives out of the way, in Paul's first match against Ash, they did battle it to a draw and give his Elekid some credit, it beat Pikachu which is supposed to be really strong, esspecially from taking down others like Regice, Metagross and other pokemon you'd expect it to lose against. Paul's techique while it doesn't seem fair for the pokemon, they do listen to his very commands and seemingly respect Paul for giving them strength. Basically they treat him more of a master than friend. If you've ever read the first few volumes or chapters of the pokemon manga, Paul you could say perfectly resembles Green at the start of the series, seeking power from his pokemon and willing to stop at nothing until he gets it. Other stand-out performances Paul's had were in the tag tournament when his Elekid took out a Heracross. Also you could say that he didn't deserve to win the match he had against Rorak but seeing how easily a pokemon with a type advantage lost and how his pokemon won without a type advantage really makes you think a bit. The other match which Paul was pretty good in is against Maylene. There are spoilers for this episode so I won't mention anything else concerning it but I will say that even though he had a type advantage, his pokemon did easily win and winning against that Lucario doesn't seem to easy to me.

I'm sorry if I've bored you with my facts on him but I do find Paul to be a nice inclusion to Pokemon. It's possible that something's happened in his past to make him so bitter since he has traveled through all those regions and hasn't won a single league in them. He seems like a decent rival for Ash but probably not fantastic since it isn't too original and that this plot is sort of common in Pokemon. However Paul just seems to have some sort of spark that makes him a bit more different and unpredictable, just like Hunter J or those random TV people. Just a question. There are people who make these things up but this seems quite possible. Do you think Paul likes Dawn/Hikari in a more like, like way?

Yes, Alexi has been bugging me over Paul, even wanting a fattie version, which I have. I do like Paul. I like how semi-evil he is. IMO, I think this may be the anime verion of the red headed guy from G/S/C. Remember him?

His Manga name is just Silver. In fact, all the main characters are called by a colour or name of a game like Emerald and so on. But anway, Paul doesm't seem to be emo. If he was, I don't really think he'll trying to capture pokemon and expose himself to others. If he was emo, he'd probably try and get a pokemon to attack him or something. He just doesn't like to be in the company of strangers I think. His brother is completely different from Paul and maybe Paul's trying to be like him. I don't want to reveal too much because it is a spoiler but Paul's brother, let's just say he's a major success in battling.

I have some ideas for a couple of Paul fics, and I really need some info and insight into him.

As far as Dawn, I think he doesn't like her yet, but he will eventally. I mean, he's not exposed to her constantly, but if he were, I'm sure he'll be so repelled by her that he'd turn around and like her. XP

There's always one thing that bugs me about Paul and that's when he shows up in an episode, something predictable and corny happens. Like in the tag battle tournament, it was obvious that they were going to win. But that's only on some occasions. Paul actually seems to be there more to annoy Ash and the group and to provide some more entertainment, rather than to be a new rival for Ash. Like when Paul couldn't remember Hikari's name, Hikari's reaction was priceless.


BTW, people are dubbing the "relationship" between Hikari/Dawn and Paul as Ikarishipping. Don't know how they can up with that but eh.

XD That sounds amusing. I haven't seen that. Do you have a clip?

Ikarishipping...I dunno, either. I've seen some AMVs, but I don't see them as being a smoochy, mushy kind of couple, if they were to even get together. If Paul were to like Dawn, he'd probably keep quiet about it and not mention it, and eventually forget it. Pokemon battles are his priority.

I've actually got a weird avatar I found. I'll upload it up as my avatar if you want. Most of the fan drawn picture of Hikari and Paul together consist of Paul keeping to himself with his quiet ways while Hikari's being the girly-girl character she is. It's weird but very entertaining which is probably why it's become sort of popular.

So I heard this weird rumour that Paul is Cyrus' son. o.O I doubt it's true, but it would certainly explain a lot: his attitude towards pokemon, his quiet demenour, his moodiness. What do you think?

Well, Cyrus doesn't appear in the game until way later, so that's not a big deal.

Actually, I can see why he would be so bitter and depressed because of his brother. He wants to be strong, and his brother already is, plus his pokemon like him. Perhaps Paul just can't get a grip on the fact that happy pokemon = strong pokemon, usually.

I'm actually starting to like Ikarishipping. o.O If it's done right, anyway.

Well we only found out about Torterra when he used it against Cynthia. He probably left him Torterra with his brother's daycare place while he looked for stronger pokemon. Torterra was never mentioned about in the japanese version before the battle against Cynthia so the dub didn't do anything wrong. They're just translating the japanese to english. There's just one thing, didn't Paul come from Veilstone City or something? It hasn't been mentioned I don't think that Paul hasn't conquered the Shinou league yet. Should you at least try and get into the Shinou League since it is in his hoime region?

Yes, that's me as well, but it's sometimes due to either gender or nature.

I think people hate him because how he treats Chimchar. That poor Pokemon tries so hard and gets so little in return.

Well, if Chimchar wasn't so weak, Paul would treat him better. XP Chimchar's the only one he seems to hate. I know he's hard on all of his pokemon, but Chimchar gets the worst treatment. He stops Chimchar from dancing happily! It's like he's reluctant to have it, but hey, it's either him or a Ponyta. Maybe he can't catch a ponyta. XD

You need to remember that Chimchar is level Five... I think. If Piplup knew Bubble, Peck, Ice Beam, etc, all in the first episode, Chimchar may be a lot stronger than that. x__x

Nah, they revealed it in a flashback in that double battle tournament. Also I doubt Rowan would let Paul take another pokemon since he did probably take Turtwig at the start. Anyway the professor's Chimchar seems a bit more cheeky while Paul's now Ash's Chimchar just likes to celebrate stuff without waving its behind.

Oh man, I had to do it. So, here's what happens to Paul twenty years from now:

So, in his search for strong pokemon, he broke down and tried to steal some. Unfortuantely, he got caught and sent to jail. When he got out, he picked up a nasty drinking problem, and began to steal pokemon more - just to prove to himself that he indeed could. o.O

And while in said jail, he found a sweet trick named Teddy, with an Ursaring tattooed on his chest. After one painful night, Paul now has a Teddiursa tattooed on his stomach.

I think Shinji (Paul) is baced on silver. Their both cold hearted, and they even look the same too! Since Silver never debuted in the pokemon anime, it is possible if Shinji is supposed to be Silver.

I have only seen some episodes of the Diamond and Pearl series but I already HATE Paul. He is such a jerk about his pokemon and just in general. He makes Gary look like a Prince. That's my opinion anyway, please don't slander me for it.

A lot of people hate Paul because he's a jerk and he's too hard on Chimchar (his other pokemon seem fine with his training methods, though). I think he just feels like he's not as good as his brother, and he's trying to catch up. When his pokemon let him down in battle, he takes his anger out on them.

I don't think he has a lot of respect for adults. In my opinion, he is a jerk only to those who he thinks treats their pokémon too nice. As for why he is not a jerk to adults, it is probably because MOST of the ones you see in the show are strong and have fully evolved pokémon. This, of course, would exclude Gym leaders.
