Bronzong
Bronzong is a very handy pokemon introduced into the 4th generation. It not only has some great supporting moves but it also has some wonderful defensive stats, making it perfect for a wall. Begin a steel type pokemon makes this even better for Bronzong since it resists some of the most common type of attacks in the game such as Ice and Rock. However the one thing Bronzong unfortunately lacks in a proper self-recovery move such as Recover. Nevertheless Bronzong is still a great pokemon and is a staple in many sides.
Wall/ Supporter
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Sassy/ Relaxed
Ability: Levitate
Attacks:
Gyro Ball
Stealth Rock
Hypnosis
Explosion/ Earthquake/ Light Screen/ Reflect
As mentioned before, Bronzong works effectively as a wall or supporter. It’s pretty basic looking at the attacks suggested, having Hypnosis to put your opponent to sleep. With it’s nature, it reduces Bronzong’s speed as much as possible to raise Gyro Ball’s power. The slower the user, the more powerful Gyro Ball is. To get maximum power, you should try and get a least speed IVs as possible as well as no speed EVs. With it’s last move, It’s up to you whether you want Bronzong to have another offensive move or supportive move. It’s up to how you like to battle and what weaknesses your side might have. As for Bronzong’s abilities, Levitate is the better ability simply because it gives Bronzong an immunity and to one of the more common types in ground. If you choose Heatproof, you can sort of safely switch into fire attacks for basically neutral damage but once your opponent figures out that you have Heatproof as your ability, expect a barrage of Earthquake attacks coming for Bronzong. Overall Bronzong isn’t a pokemon that is easy to penetrate and it makes a fantastic wall or supporter.

Calm Mind Sweeper/ Tank
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Modest/ Bold
Ability: Levitate
Attacks:
Calm Mind
Grass Knot/ Charge Beam/ Psychic/ Rest/ Shadow Ball/ Hidden Power Ice
Grass Knot/ Charge Beam/ Psychic/ Rest/ Shadow Ball/ Hidden Power Ice
Grass Knot/ Charge Beam/ Psychic/ Rest/ Shadow Ball/ Hidden Power Ice
The special sweeping version of Bronzong isn’t too common but it can be very effective. Calm Mind is the obvious move to boost your stats but if you want, you could replace that with something else and just use Charge Beam as your special attack raising move. However if you do choose to have Calm Mind, Charge Beam can still be of assistance against Gyarados. Basically choose your moves and put up a surprise sweep.

Sleep Talk
Item: Leftovers/ Life Orb/ Macho Brace
Nature: Brave/ Sassy/ Relaxed
Ability: Levitate
Attacks:
Gyro Ball
Earthquake
Rest
Sleep Talk
Bronzong is one of the most common walls in the 4th generation but it lacks something that was very vital for it, a recovery move like Recover or Roost. Besides Wish Passing or Leftovers, Rest was pretty much the only other way Bronzong could restore it’s health and as you can see, this set tries to take advantage of it. The trouble with Sleep Talk is that it isn’t too reliable since it chooses a move at random so you could be using Rest due to Sleep Talk right after the run you’ve used Rest in the first place. However with this set, it allows you to switch into sleep inducing attacks and strike back for a slight surprise. However this Bronzong isn’t focused as much on providing support for team mates. It’s purely a tank like figure in a side.

Trick Room
Item: Leftovers/ Macho Brace
Nature: Brave
Ability: Levitate
Attacks:
Gyro Ball
Earthquake
Hypnosis/ Explosion
Trick Room
Bronzong is a great pokemon at setting up Trick Room because of its sturdiness and low speed. After Trick Room has been set up, Bronzong should be attacking first pretty much all of the time and with a powerful Gyro Ball coming up, that’s no pretty sight for your opponent. Earthquake is to cover common switch ins like Magnezone and Heatran. The only true dilemma you have is with Explosion and Hypnosis. Personally Hypnosis is a good choice but the chance of it missing is quite high and if your opponent randomly sends in something like Charizard, you could be in big trouble. However Explosion does take out this wonderful Trick Room starter which isn’t a favorable option. Macho Brace is a good item here since it doubles Gyro Ball’s power and makes Bronzong slower, perfect for a choice team. Basically, Bronzong is a great choice for any Trick Room team.

Standard Swords Dance set except Calm Mind is the Swords Dance. Simply use Calm Mind before using another move and hopefully you’ll earn 8 hearts. If you don’t you’re in trouble but with sets like this that allow you to double you score basically, you can’t go wrong…too much.

Type:
In the previous generation, the steel and psychic combination of types have proved to be very useful, granting the pokemon many resistances as well as only two weaknesses. Jirachi and Metagross were the two and Bronzong in the 4th generation has taken the steel and psychic combination to a new level with its ability. Essentially whichever one of its abilities you choose to use, it’ll basically grant you only one weakness except on rare occasions. This alone allows Bronzong to wall effectively along with it’s awesome defenses. Unfortunately it’s HP isn’t as great, at a rather appalling 67 base. However that hasn’t put people off from using Bronzong, in fact around 1/3 at least of teams will have it. Because of its steel attribute and Levitate ability, Bronzong is one of the few pokemon who can stand up to a Swords Dance Garchomp, barring in mind that it doesn’t have Fire Fang. It instantly walls almost all psychic pokemon as well as most special sweepers not carrying a fire move. Again the disappointing thing about Bronzong is that it doesn’t have a self recovery move like Recover so after a few Shadow Ball attacks from Gengar, Bronzong will eventually faint if it can’t put it to sleep or take it down. Bronzong isn’t feared for sweeping sides so there’s pretty much no need to bring in something to immediately counter Bronzong’s attacks. However as a wall or supporter, Bronzong can cause teams much trouble with its defensive prowess. Because Bronzong’s a steel pokemon without a heap of attacking potential most of the time, Magnezone is a great switch in for Bronzong, trapping it with it’s ability and resisting most of Bronzong’s attacks. However you might want to think twice if Bronzong is carrying Earthquake. If Bronzong for some reasons doesn’t have Levitate, a strong Earthquake spells out trouble or a pokemon with Mold Breaker could also take down Bronzong with ease. A standard Gyarados with Taunt basically makes Bronzong look like a sitting duck to Dragon Dance however Bronzong still has to worry about Explosion. Spiritomb is also a good choice against Bronzong, taking Gyro Ball easily while charging up with some Nasty Plot attacks. Basically, almost anything can set themselves up against Bronzong, barring in mind Hypnosis. Once you dodge Hypnosis, Bronzong is basically yours to sweep. Just watch out for Explosion. Unfortunately, that’s the other downside to Bronzong, that many pokemon use it to set themselves up against.
Abilities- Levitate:
Levitate is the better choice of ability for Bronzong. It simply grants Bronzong complete immunity from ground attacks and Spikes. Just remember that Gravity, Mold Breaker and other small things will cancel out this ability. However those are very rare, and since it also gives Bronzong protection from one of its weaknesses, Levitate is a better ability.
Heatproof:
The ability on Bronzong’s is often overlooked and rightfully so. If you do choose to use this ability for some reasons, it’ll basically mean all fire attacks will deal neutral damage to Bronzong. At first this sounds like a handy ability, basically granting Bronzong reprieve from one of it’s weaknesses but with Levitate, granting Bronzong complete immunity from another more common type in ground plus immunity from Spikes, the choice is quite obvious. Any good trainer who sees their fire attack substantially weaker when having attacked Bronzong or Bronzong taking damage from Spikes will guess that Bronzong has Heatproof and send a wave of Earthquake attacks at it and when you’re looking down the barrel of an Earthquake coming from the likes of Rhyperior, it isn’t a pretty sight. Also Dugtrio can come in a wall Bronzong will ease before striking back with an Earthquake of its own, possibly knocking it out. Because of the disadvantages Heatproof can have compared to Levitate, Heatproof is second best with Bronzong.
