Yanmega
Basically one phrase can sum up Yanmega completely, it’s good without being great. Yanmega was a pokemon who benefited pretty well from the battling changes; making some previously purely physical type attacks special typed. Yanmega has a very good special attack power, it has gained a few handy moves and it has some handy abilities, making it an obvious choice for some. However for others like me, Yanmega just doesn’t work too well. It’s type combination is horrible, giving it at least four common weaknesses, no real handy resistances and a x4 weakness to the now common Stealth Rock, limiting Yanmega’s use. Really, Yanmega is a decent pokemon but it sometimes just doesn’t or can’t do what you want it to do.
Lead/ Mini-Special Sweeper
Item: Leftovers/ Wide Lens/ Focus Sash
Nature: Modest
Ability: Speed Boost
Attacks:
Hypnosis/ Substitute/ Protect
Hypnosis/ Substitute/ Protect/ Air Slash/ Bug Buzz
Air Slash/ Bug Buzz
Hidden Power Ground/ Hidden Power Electric/ Hidden Power Ice/ Air Slash/ Bug Buzz
Yanmega is a great lead, gaining Hypnosis in the 4th generation. Depending on how you use Yanmega, Protect could be your first move, using it to scout out for whatever move your opponent is going to use and to also get a free boost of speed from its ability. However if taking on a slower pokemon, Substitute might work just as well. Hypnosis is almost standard on all Yanmega, putting your opponent to sleep before easily sweeping. However the problem with this is that you leave yourself with only two attacking moves, most of the time in Bug Buzz and Air Slash, two moves which are easily walled by pokemon such Heatran and Skarmory and in fact, most special walls. That is the reason why I’ve added in Hidden Power because it just helps out so much. However it is possible to run the show without it, having either Hypnosis or Protect in there depending on whichever one you chose as your first move. You could even take out either Air Slash or Bug Buzz but that isn’t a good idea. Basically there are many versions of a lead Yanmega because it makes such a good lead so there probably would be a lot of argument over what moves to use. It is possible to ditch Hypnosis but that is one of the less wise options.

Choice
Item: Choice Specs/ Choice Scarf
Nature: Modest/ Timid
Ability: Speed Boost/ Tinted Lens
Attacks:
Bug Buzz
Air Slash
Hidden Power Ground/ Hidden Power Electric/ Hidden Power Ice
Hypnosis/ U-Turn/ Psychic/ Shadow Ball/ Ancient Power/ Giga Drain
Yanmega as mentioned before has a wonderful special attack power which allows it to use Choice Items. Choice Specs is the way to go but if you desperately want, you can include Choice Scarf but if you do, just change its ability to Tinted Lens. With Choice Specs, either ability is ok but Tinted Lens is probably also the better option. Bug Buzz and Air Slash are basic while Hidden Power covers some popular pokemon. Ground for Heatran which basically walls Yanmega, electric for Gyarados and ice for dragons. It’s last move it just up to you. Yanmega overall makes a decent choice pokemon but there are better options.

Pure Special Sweeper
Item: Petaya Berry
Nature: Modest
Ability: Speed Boost
Attacks:
Bug Buzz
Air Slash
Substitute
Hidden Power Ground/ Hidden Power Ice
This is the pure special sweeping version of Yanmega, packing quite a bit of power, especially if used late in the game. Substitute brings your health low enough to activate Petaya Berry before well, sweep. The problem here is that two different pokemon can almost completely wall Yanmega, Heatran and Zapdos. Hidden Power can only cover one of those pokemon so you’re going to be left exposed no matter what. Simple really but again, there are a few other pokemon who are better special sweepers that get the job done a bit better and if not safer.

Physical Sweeper
Item: Leichi Berry
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Speed Boost
Attacks:
Bug Bite/ Hypnosis/ Pursuit
Substitute
Aerial Ace/ Bug Bite
Reversal/ Pursuit/ Night Slash
A physical sweeping Yanmega isn’t particularly feared and is considered a novelty. However this novelty still has a usable attack power and has quite a fairly good physical movepool. Substitute has the same purpose as it did in the pure special sweeping set, to get your health low enough to activate your berry which in this case is Leichi Berry. Now with the wide movepool it has, Yanmega will basically try and avoid the same problem it had in its special sweeping set, Heatran and Zapdos. With your health low enough from Substitute attacks, you should have Reversal at full power but even then you’ll have a tough time against Zapdos. Hypnosis might help but it does take way one of Yanmega’s much-needed attacking moves. The reason why I haven’t made the possible STAB moves necessary as much as I did before is that their power is relatively low so going for coverage is a bit better. However in saying this, Yanmega as a physical sweeper does still get walled very easily.

Contest Type: Beauty
Moves:
Feint
Air Slash
Bug Buzz
Ancient Power
Yanmega is again one of those pokemon who do not have the Swords Dance combo so this will have to do. However this set does rise above most others similar to this, providing some useful advantages. Air Slash and Ancient Power work best if you go first or last respectively while Bug Buzz will almost every time guarantee you 4 hearts. Feint is basically a filler but it does come in handy if used at the right time.

Yanmega was one of those unfortunate pokemon who got a pretty bad type combination of bug and flying. The most noticeable weakness being a x4 weakness to Stealth Rock, losing 50% of its health when switching in every time. However that’s not the only downside. The type combination also gives Yanmega no real resistances and some major weaknesses, making switching in a lot harder. Also Yanmega’s defenses aren’t what you call great or even good meaning that Yanmega can be broken like a twig with some powerful attacks. Pokemon like Skarmory, Heatran and other steel pokemon can wall Yanmega pretty well if Hidden Power doesn’t completely target their weakness. Zapdos is also another wonderful choice of Yanmega doesn’t have Hidden Power Ice. Most of the time Yanmega will have to choose between whether to cover Heatran and steels or Zapdos and dragons. Besides steel pokemon, Aerodactyle with its resistance to flying attack also makes a decent counter for Yanmega. Blissey, Milotic, Suicune and Togekiss can wall Yanmega will a relative amount of ease and strike back with something powerful. Something like an Ice Shard from Weavile or Mamoswine ought to do the trick. Basically strike hard against Yanmega because it is very fragile and will tumble quite easily.
Abilities:
Speed Boost: Speed Boost was a unique ability available to only Ninjask in the previous generation but now Yanmega also has access to the wonderful ability. At the end of every turn, Yanmega gets a speed boost equivalent to a Salac Berry boost at the end of each turn. This ability can help Yanmega greatly not only giving it the power to outrun many pokemon but also with this ability, it won’t have to worry about stuff like its nature as much, well not towards speed.
Tinted Lens: Tinted Lens is also another fantastic ability Yanmega has access to. It basically doubles your attack power when you move it being resisted by your opponent. So a Bug Buzz to a Zapdos with this ability will do neutral damage. A helpful ability for the more offensive sets.
