Magnezone
Not many people would’ve expected Magneton to evolve but it did and here is the result, Magnezone. Magnezone basically out matches Magneton in every stat except speed, unfortunately allowing such pokemon like Metagross to maybe outrun it. In the previous generation, Magneton was used in teams mainly to shut down the every so annoying and maybe cheap Skarmbliss combination by using its Magnet Pull ability to trap Skarmory before taking it out with Thunderbolt. In the 4th generation, this is no different for Magnezone except with a few news moves, Magnezone is able to play a few more roles now in teams. However its main role is still to destroy the Skarmbliss combo.
Usual
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Magnet Pull
Nature: Modest/ Timid
Attacks:
Thunderbolt
Magnet Rise
Substitute/ Thunder Wave
Thunder Wave/ Substitute/ Reflect/ Light Screen/ Flash Cannon/ Mirror Coat
This set is generally used to take down the Skarmbliss combo. On a small note, Hidden Power Ice should be included there in the last slot but because of how long it might take to get the right IVs and the right nature Magnemite to evolve into Magnezone, it wasn’t included but if you by luck get a powerful Hidden Power Ice with the right nature Magnemite, by all means use it. Just replace the last move.
Anyways, Thunderbolt is obviously a must to take down Skarmory bearing in mind that it doesn’t hold Shed. Do remember that Magnezone has a very high special attack power meaning that it can still battle like a normal pokemon once its main objective in battle has been completed. Magnet Rise protects it from ground moves, taking out its x4 ground weakness while keeping the same ability. This means pokemon like Metagross will be pretty harmless against Magnezone once Magnet Rise has been used unless that Metagross has Fire Punch. It also protects it from Dugtrio, a common counter for Magnezone. Substitute is quite basic here but Thunder Wave is a considerable option to paralyze your opponent. It’s final move it up to you but do remember that Flash Cannon is only for a bit of extra coverage and besides that, it’s basically useless. However Magnezone overall isn’t a useless pokemon at all, boasting a high special attack and good defenses.
Rating: 9/10
Special Sweeper
Item: Leftovers/ Life Orb
Ability: Magnet Pull
Nature: Mild/ Quiet
Attacks:
Thunderbolt
Flash Cannon/ Metal Sound
Explosion
Magnet Rise/ Substitute/ Mirror Coat
Magnezone’s movepool is very limited and therefore it doesn’t make the best special sweeper. However it’ll have to make do with its already high special attack. Thunderbolt is your main sweeping move while Flash Cannon hits others like Mamoswine who can block Thunderbolt. Metal Sound though sharply lowers the foe’s special defence making it a possible option. Explosion is just a last resort type of move and with its last move; any of the three are fine. There isn’t much to explain but again if possible, get HP Ice because it’ll greaten Magnezone’s sweeping potential but Magnezone doesn’t make the best special sweeper. With its nature, both of them increase special attack power without deducting attack power so Explosion can still leave a dent in one of your opponent’s pokemon.

Thunder Wave
Thunderbolt
A complete novelty set and should only be used for non-serious battles. Reflect and Light Screen are used here to provide support for incoming teammates hence the role supporter while Thunder Wave slows down faster pokemon. Thunderbolt for damage. There isn’t much to say except set up as much as you can before switching out. This set is considered inferior to the others so it’s best to not use this one when battling a full pro person.

Contests
Contest Type: Cool
Moves:
Zap Cannon
Thunderbolt
Façade
Hidden Power/ Protect
Magnezone isn’t a great pokemon to use in contests due to its very risky movepool but this is the best I could come up with. Zap Cannon earns a possible 4 hearts if the judge’s voltage goes up which is almost always. Thunderbolt gives you 4 hearts as well if you perform first and Façade if you go last. Basically Magnezone is too risky of a pokemon to use in contests because there are a lot of things that can go wrong and ruin your appeal and cost you the contest.

Type
Magnezone is of both Steel and Electric type. Magnezone has a ton of resistances and only 3 weaknesses, which one of them can be eliminated with Magnet Rise. Magnezone’s defensive stats are also quite impressive so don’t think a simple volley of attacks can bring down Magnezone. However one thing that lets down Magnezone is its speed, being reduced from Magneton. This allows pokemon such as Metagross and Rampardos to come it with Earthquake and wipe out Magnezone if it hasn’t used Magnet Rise already. Most fire pokemon who can outrun Magnezone will be trouble for it, the most noticeable one being Infernape. Pokemon such as Blissey or Electivire who can easily take Magnezone’s attacks and counter back are excellent choices and even Heracross might be able to pull something off. However be wary not to be too hasty when switching a ground type pokemon like Dugtrio in to battle Magnezone because Dugtrio by all means is screwed if Magnezone has used Magnet Rise already. If not, go nuts with ground pokemon such as Hippowdon and Steelix. Basically anything with a high special attack power that has a STAB move of one of Magnezone’s weaknesses is a good choice, if it isn’t using Substitute that is. Other pokemon that can trouble Magnezone are Lanturn, Flygon and Lucario. One of the main problems Magnezone will face is Shed Shell, sometimes making it harder for it to serve out its role as a Skarmory destroyer or something like that. Normally Magnet Pull prevents steel type pokemon from escaping but with Shed Shell, all Skarmory can run off back to their pokeballs and hide from Magnezone. Nevertheless, Magnezone is still a wonderful pokemon will potential and most of the times, Skarmory would be holding Leftovers so Magnezone can still complete its mission of taking it down. It just has to watch out for Garchomp and Swampert.
Abilities
Magnet Pull- This is the ability that gave Magnezone and Magneton all the fame they’ve received. It is the number one way to shut down the Skarmbliss combo or at least part of it. It prevents steel type pokemon from escaping unless they use U-Turn or if they have Shed Shell. It’s a good ability but after taking out Skarmory however some people do question this ability’s worth after Skarmory is gone.
Sturdy- The alternate ability and definitely the worse one. It only prevents moves like Horn Drill from working. Considering the rarity of the moves and their bad accuracy, it isn’t really worth mentioning too much about this ability.
