Staraptor
In every generation of pokemon, there are always a few easy pokemon to catch at the beginning of the game such as Pidgey. They’re okay to use in the game along your journey but aren’t going to be particularly helpful. However Staraptor is different from all of them. Besides having a great amount of attack power, Staraptor also has a good moveset and decent stats to work with. This brings Staraptor into the BL area of battling and sometimes the OU. The one thing holding it back is its limited number of roles it can play in a side.
Physical Sweeper
Item: Life Orb/ Muscle Band/ Leftovers
Nature: Adamant
Attacks:
Brave Bird
Return/ U-Turn/ Substitute/ Pursuit
Close Combat
Agility
Staraptor is quite a powerful pokemon and as you can see, it isn’t supposed to be taken lightly. It has a high attack and a good speed making it an excellent candidate to become a physical sweeper. Brave Bird should be your main move here, packing 180 power with STAB. Close Combat is a must to take on pokemon rock and steel pokemon and if you can outrun them after using Agility, Weavile to avoid recoil damage. Agility is just to give Staraptor a little speed boost so it can even bring down pokemon such as Jolteon if lucky. With its second move, all the moves there are equally as good. I would suggest probably Return or U-Turn.
Rating: 7.5/10
Choice
Item: Choice Band/ Choice Scarf
Nature: Adamant/ Jolly (Only if item is Choice Band)
Attacks:
Brave Bird/ Return
Close Combat
Return/ U-Turn/ Pursuit
Return/ U-Turn/ Pursuit
Staraptor does play best as a choice pokemon. There’s not much to explain as a pokemon holding a choice item, just do as much damage as possible then leg it if you need to. Brave Bird is once again its main attacking move with Close Combat for coverage. With its last two moves, Return is there just incase you don’t like a heavy recoil from Brave Bird but it does take up a valuable spot. U-Turn makes pretty good use of choice items, dealing damage then fleeing. Pursuit also works well here against pokemon such as Alakazam who don’t like the risk of being outrun but a Staraptor with Choice Scarf. Not much to explain about a choice pokemon really, just sweep.

Contest
Contest Type: Smart
Moves:
U-Turn
Aerial Ace/ Protect
Endeavor
Hidden Power
Staraptor doesn’t have luxury of the simple Swords Dance or Nasty Plot combination that works so well. However this set with a little luck might just be as good. U-Turn works best on the judge with the least amount of voltage. Like in the previous generation, Aerial Ace is best used when going first and Endeavor gives you at least 4 points if you go last. Hidden Power gives you a handy boost if you have the lowest points for the round. As you can see, this set covers pretty much everything there is to cover from when Staraptor performs to how it can get the biggest points. I know this might seem a bit dull but with the way the appeal round goes in the 4th generation, this is pretty much what almost every pokemon will be using besides the Swords Dance combo.
Rating: 8.5/10
Type:
Staraptor is of both Flying and Normal. With this, Staraptor carries around 2 handy immunities meaning it can switch into battle with a relative amount of ease. However besides that, its type combination really does it no other huge favors. Its basically just another flying pokemon to shoot down since Staraptor has pretty useless resistances and some very common weaknesses. The best way to bring it down is with a bulky sweeper of some sorts. Jolteon is a tempting pokemon to use against Staraptor but keep in mind that Choice Scarf is a possibility meaning that Jolteon isn’t your best choice. Strong defensive pokemon such as Rhyperior and Cloyster can get the job done, even if Close Combat’s in the way. Other pokemon that would pose a threat are Gyarados and Salamence, two pokemon that greatly reduce Staraptor’s potential with their Intimidate ability. Bronzong can easily wall Staraptor and if Staraptor is holding Choice Scarf, a powerful Gyro Ball could leave a huge dent in it. Other pokemon like Garchomp and Porygon Z who might also be holding Choice Scarf pose big threats to Staraptor. Weezing and Dusknoir with Willo-Wisp handy will mean big trouble for Staraptor. Finally powerful steel and rock pokemon like Skarmory, Aerodactyle or Metagross who receive neutral damage from Close Combat also help. Staraptor’s defenses are around average so some powerful attacks ought to bring it down. The other real problem for Staraptor is its potential. It’s a good physical sweeper but that’s basically it. There are some other pokemon such as Garchomp who are better physical sweepers meaning that because there are so many other better physical sweepers, Staraptor is often overlooked despite is good stats.
Ability
Intimidate- Staraptor’s only ability is Intimidate, lowering your opponent’s attack by one stage upon entering the battle. This ability is pretty good for Staraptor as this means that it can take on a wider range of pokemon. Intimidate is always a nice handy ability to have.
