What is/are your favourite movie(s) and why?
For Alexi:
1. Red Dragon. This is my favourite of the Hannibal Lecter movies, one because it stayed very close to the book. (I think Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal were both just slaughters of the books. No pun intended.) It is basically a remake of Manhunter, which was a (loose) adaptation of Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. However, it has a far superior cast (Ed Norton is a great Will Graham, as he is able to portray Graham's hesitancy to get involved in a case after early retirement, and who can say Sir Anthony Hopkins is not THE Hannibal Lecter?) and it shows the antagonist, Francis Dolarhyde, much more than Manhunter. Dolarhyde (played by Ralph Fiennes) is a man who is hearing the voice of the Great Red Draon (see William Blake's painting, The Great Red Draon and the Woman Clothed With the Sun) which tells him to kill in order to become the Dragon. The movie shows a lot of the FBI's Beviour Science Unit, and also has a lot of character development. If you haven't seen this movie, you really should, especially if you are interested in criminal profiling.
2. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney). Created in Disney's Golden Age, this story always makes my eyes tear up, which is something I will only admit online. :D The music is amazing, and the story is compelling, and the art is simply breath-taking. The conflict between a deformed hunchback and a society that simply won't accept him reminds me much of my own life (not that I would ever try to out-do Quasimodo's painful exsistance, it's just sometimes I feel like I should crawl away in a bell tower somewhere). The corrupt Judge Claude Frollo, one of the best villains of all time in my opinion, has one of the best songs ever, Hellfire, in which he tells of his lust towards the gypsy Esmirelda. It's simply amazing how a kiddy movie like this can also be so mature and thought-provoking. Victor, Hugo and Laverne provide nice comic relief without being over the top, like most of Disney's movies are today. This may be a more serious movie, but I think it's one of the best. If only Disney could make more moves like this.
Please include your reasons for your favourite movies. You don't have to write a while essay (like I did...ehheh...) but don't just post a list of your favourite movies. I'd like to discuss varous movies and maye we all can come away from this thread with a new-found appreciation for some movies or learn about some that we never heard of before. ^_^
