Pachirisu

Pachirisu isn’t a pokemon that particularly stands out for anything really. It does have a few things going for it but not many. Because of this, Pachirisu will never break out of the UU section of battling. In saying this, Pachirisu isn’t a totally bad pokemon as like many electric type pokemon, it has a decent amount of speed and a useful movepool. Pachirisu is more like one of those pokemon people use for fun instead of serious battling. Just don’t expect too much from this electric squirrel.

Special Sweeper

Item: Leftovers/ Damp Rock
Nature: Timid

Attacks:
Rain Dance
Grass Knot
Thunder
Super Fang/ Thunder Wave

As you can see, Pachirisu’s special sweeping moveset is pretty dull, having nothing special in it. I’ve decided to go with the Rain Dancing one so of course Rain Dance is necessary. Thunder never misses in the rain plus Grass Knot takes care of those heavier pokemon who try and take advantage of Pachirisu. With its last move, Super Fang is really one of the only moves which particularly stands out for Pachirisu, dealing at most half of your opponent’s health but Thunder Wave could also be a possible replacement. Overall Pachirisu wasn’t really meant to be a sweeper of any kind so really, this moveset isn’t suggested. On one final note, with Pachirisu’s abilities, both of them are basically useless for a battle so there’s no use in listing or suggesting them.

Rating: 5/10

Supporter

Item: Leftovers/ Light Clay
Nature: Timid

Attacks:
Thunder Wave
Light Screen
Super Fang
U-Turn/ Thunderbolt/ Sweet Kiss

This is the set I generally use when I use Pachirisu. Thunder Wave is a useful move that paralyzes your opponent. Light Screen will give your side some more support and Super Fang might get in some helpful damage. With its last move, Sweet Kiss is unreliable but might help keep Pachirisu in play for longer. U-Turn is a handy move, causing damage then switching out straight away. Thunderbolt is an option just to try and cause some damage but again don’t expect a lot. Pachirisu’s prowess really makes it drop down to even past the UU section but with this moveset, it might be strong enough to take down some of the more powerful pokemon.

Contest

Contest Type: Smart

Moves:
Protect
Thunderbolt
Grass Knot
Hidden Power

Pachirisu doesn’t have the luxury of a non-risky moveset so this will have to do. The good thing about this one is that it could possibly earn more points that the usual points doubling method. Protect gives you a max of 4 hearts, depending on the judge you choose. Thunderbolt gives you 4 hearts if you appeal first. Both these moves are okay but the last 2 moves are what are really going to win you a contest. Grass Knot gives you 4 points if you manage to raise a judge’s voltage. Because it’s a smart move, these are not going to be a better place to use it and on most occasions you are going to get 4 points because very few people will try and prevent you from raising voltage mainly because it’s not as important now. Hidden Power can give you seven points as well including the points from the crowd, meaning that it is quite useful. Overall if you’re lucky enough, you can earn a total of around 24, presuming that you perform to the same judge others do.

Rating: 7.5/10

Type:
Pachirisu is a pure electric type pokemon. Because of this, it only has one weakness in ground. Like some electric pokemon, Pachirisu’s defenses are both pretty low so a strong volley of attacks will easily faint it. A Dugtrio with Arena Trap spells the end for Pachirisu.

Abilities:
Battling wise, I’m not going to bother explaining about Pachirisu’s abilities because they are both basically useless in battle. In the wild, the Pickup ability would be better.

Overall Rating for Pachirisu: 6/10

Infernape

Infernape is the fully evolved fire starter pokemon of the Shinou region. However unlike the previous 3, Infernape is used for commonly and for good reason. It boasts better stats, moves and is easy to obtain. Infernape has become one of the most feared pokemon in battles, able to play a physical, special and mixed sweeper role. Its hard to sum up Infernape really, such a good pokemon with great attacking and speed prowess. Very few sides don’t have to fear this flaming monkey of pain.
Note: I’m only going to do three sets here but I know Infernape can use a whole lot more. Because I’m only doing 3 sets, moves such as U-Turn and Earthquake are left out however they are considerable in Choice and other sets.

Mixed Sweeper

Item: Life Orb/ Expert Belt
Nature: Naïve/ Hasty

Attacks:
Nasty Plot/ Stone Edge
Grass Knot
Close Combat
Flamethrower/ Overheat

This version of Infernape is probably the most common one as it does take out both Skarmory and Blissey while also covering for Swampert. Nasty Plot gives Infernape that extra special attack boost but it could be dropped for Stone Edge to cover for Salamence, a common counter against this type of Infernape. Its fire attack here is obviously for STAB damage and Grass Knot as mentioned before eliminates Swampert plus Close Combat takes care of Blissey while still being a powerful move. Infernape’s defenses are already quite low so Close Combat’s downside effect won’t leave as big of a dent but it takes good judgment on when to use Infernape because a bad switch in could either leave Infernape fainted or on the verge of fainting. Infernape’s bad defenses make it quite hard for it to take on slower pokemon such as Hippowdon, Vaporeon and some dragon pokemon safely. But nevertheless, Infernape is a devastatingly strong pokemon, especially with such a powerful moveset.

Rating: 9/10

Special Sweeper

Item: Life Orb/ Wise Glasses
Nature: Timid

Attacks:
Nasty Plot
Flamethrower/ Overheat
Grass Knot
Focus Blast/ Close Combat

A special sweeping version of Infernape. As mentioned before, Infernape has the ability to go both physical and special as well as mixed sweeping. Nasty Plot simply makes things a whole lot easier sweeping wise, doubling Infernape’s special attack power. It’s fire attack will be Infernape’s main source of damage here, gaining the boost. The reason why I’ve chosen Overheat as an option is because of Nasty Plot. One use of Overheat will cancel out Nasty Plot but you’ve then got a second Overheat you could use, still powerful. But getting rid of your boost from Nasty Plot isn’t a favorable option. Grass Knots takes care of bulky water and ground type pokemon while its fighting type attack provides more coverage for Infernape. Focus Blast is more powerful than Close Combat but the chance of it missing it quite high, meaning that Close Combat can be considered, even though it doesn’t gain the boost from Nasty Plot. The key thing for Infernape to watch out here is for Gyarados and Salamence, 2 common pokemon that can easily shut down Infernape.

Rating: 8.5/10

Physical Sweeper

Item: Life Orb/ Muscle Band
Nature: Jolly

Attacks:
Swords Dance
Close Combat
Flare Blitz/ Blaze Kick/ Overheat
Stone Edge/ Thunderpunch

Like the special sweeping version of Infernape, the physical version also has a move to double its respective attack power, Swords Dance. Close Combat is its main sweeping move, dealing out the most damage at the littlest possible risk. Flare Blitz is a risky move combined with Life Orb. While it does a ton of damage, the recoil damage means that Infernape could lose more the ¼ of its HP with Life Orb and combine that the possibility of Spikes doing damage when you switched it, it leaves Infernape very vulnerable to attacks such as Extremespeed and Aqua Jet. Because of this, Blaze Kick might be able to be used buts its lower amount of power and accuracy does make Flare Blitz a better option. Overheat is a special attack but it at least still packs a lot of power. Stone Edge once again is to take down Salamence and Gyarados, 2 pokemon who are used commonly to shut down Infernape. Thunderpunch is also an option but it really only takes care of Gyarados and still leaves you wide open to Salamence. However, Infernape as a physical sweeper does have its pros and cons over the special sweeping version and it is a very powerful choice.

Contests

Contest Type: Cute

Moves:
Nasty Plot
Protect
Willo-Wisp
Hidden Power/ Feint/ Rock Climb

The old reliable double points combo. Nasty Plot will double your next round’s points, hopefully giving you an 8 appeal. This works in the same way as every other combo that involves either Swords Dance or Nasty Plot so there isn’t much to explain. Just read the descriptions on the moves and you’ll find something that suits you.

Type:
Like Blaziken, Infernape is also of both fire and fighting type. Because of its typing, Infernape has gained some excellent coverage over popular pokemon such as Blissey and Bronzong. And with the movepool it has, it was obvious from the start that Infernape was a better pokemon than Blaziken, boasting more speed at the expense of some power. Tackling Infernape head on while also exploiting one of its weaknesses ain’t going to help most of the time if you don’t have something that can outrun it. Most likely Infernape will be carrying something that will provide coverage for its weaknesses. Grass Knot is the one to look out for, breaking down bulky pokemon like Swampert and Hippowdon. However a pokemon that can easily outrun Infernape like Alakazam or a pokemon that can paralyze it can easily take the sails out of Infernape. Infernape’s defenses are terrible meaning that it won’t survive in battle for long if it has to take a lot of hits. Its takes good prediction and skill by the user of Infernape on when to bring it into and out of battle so that it doesn’t get OHKO. Dugtrio would probably be your no.1 candidate for shutting down Infernape since it does have more speed and has a STAB Earthquake waiting while not letting Infernape get away with its Arena Trap ability. Pokemon like Gyarados, Altaria and Salamence also cause major problems for Infernape, especially the mixed version since none of its attacks except Stone Edge will do a lot of damage to them. Vaporeon is also a good choice also to take on Infernape; able to resist even a Nasty Plot Grass Knot however it is open to Swords Dance Close Combat. Other pokemon such as Starmie, Aerodactyle and Azelf who have enough speed will spell the end of Infernape and bulky pokemon like Slowbro and Milotic can cause big trouble for it as well. Also Cresselia will be one of Infernape’s biggest problems, boasting enough defence to take a Nasty Plot Flamethrower and to rebound with a powerful Psychic attack. Also watch out for Aqua Jets coming unexpectedly from Floatzel and Empoleon. Again, it takes knowledge and skill on when to bring out Infernape into battle to fully utilize this pokemon’s abilities.

Ability
Blaze: Blaze is an ability unique to only the pokemon who are part of the evolution chain of the fire starters. This ability is quite helpful, increasing the power of fire attacks by 1.5 when HP gets below 1/3. Combine that with STAB, its item and a possible increase from either Swords Dance or Nasty Plot and you’ve got yourself one charged up fire attack. There however are 2 problems with this ability. 1 is that you’ll need Infernape’s HP to be low enough and Infernape might not survive for long enough to activate this ability. The second problem is that it might not have long to use the ability due to the fact that you might be using Life Orb as your item. It chips away at your health each time you do damage to your opponent with an attacking move. With recoil damage from Flare Blitz, you might find Infernape gone before you’ve had any time to fully use this ability. Nevertheless this is still one handy ability.
