Dawn’s Early Night

The episode starts off with Ash running together with his pokemon, desperately followed by Dawn and Brock. Quickly seeing the Hearthome Gym, Staravia begins to fly faster causing Ash to speed up with his other pokemon. Upon arriving he sees a familiar face standing at the entrance, Nando. Nando while strumming his harp says that the gym leader is away, shocking Ash so much that he carelessly crashes into the door of the gym along with his other pokemon.

After recovering, Ash realizes an orange cricket with sickles as hands jumping about in front of him. As Dawn and Brock arrive, Nando explains that he was hoping to have a gym battle along side his new pokemon, Kricketune but apparently, it’s not possible. Ash checks out the pokemon on his pokedex before Kricketune begins to use its sickles as a cello and Dawn comments how the pokemon seems to suit Nando. Nando then notices a small note attached to the door and begins to read it saying that the gym leader has gone away on a long trip and isn’t going to come back for a while.

Still psyched up, Ash begins to complain but soon calms down when Nando mentions the Hearthome Tag Battle Tournament. As the name suggests, the tournament is a tag battle tournament with trainers teaming up with each other, battling their way to the finals. Excited, Ash decides to team up with Brock who gladly accepts. Ash questions if Nando is going to enter but the harp playing man says that he’s concentrating on the pokemon contest to be held. Hearing this, Dawn suddenly remembers that she has forgotten to register once again.

Later, Dawn is walking with Nando down the busy streets of Hearthome City. Curious, Dawn asks Nando how his journey is going and with a sort of disappointed tune, answers that he only has one gym badge and one ribbon. Dawn replies that she also has only one ribbon before saying that a friend helped her prepare for the double performance contests. The two then soon arrive at the grand contest hall.

The hall outside is bustling with coordinators everywhere, eager to perform. Among one of them is Zoey, busily away combing her Shellos with her Glameow and Misdrevous. Upon seeing her, Dawn quickly rushes over and joins up with her friend as Nando walks over introducing himself. Nando explains that because of Dawn and Ash that he decided to take part in both gym battles and contests. Instantly Zoey shoots a look of disgust at him before turning her head away, saying that Nando has to make up his mind over what he’s going to do, either contests or gym battles as Dawn stands in the middle of the hostility, confused of what she should do.

Meanwhile, Jessie is warming her pokemon up for the contest. Her Dustox and Seviper circle around her as James and Meowth watch on perplexed at the strange warm up. After making her decision, Jessie decides not to use her pokemon before snatching away Mime Jr from James, indicating that she’s going to be using the little mime pokemon in the contest.

That night at the pokemon center, Dawn is checking over her pokemon as Ash and Brock walk over to her. Dawn exclaims that she’s quite nervous since it’s her first ever-serious double performance when she hears a familiar voice. Walking to the group is Zoey, apologizing to Ash about the Hearthome Gym being closed. Dawn then remembers and thanks Zoey for helping her with training in double performances, mentioning how good she’ll look with her pokemon. This causes Zoey to shutter for a moment telling Dawn that her pokemon are the ones that have to good, not Dawn herself. A worried look appears on Dawn’s face but its soon wiped off when Dawn finally understands what Zoey is trying to say.

The next day, at the pokemon contest, the MC is giving out her usual speech, welcoming everyone, explaining procedures and introducing the judges. After her speech, the first coordinator arrives on stage for his performance. Nando steps out in front of the crowd as that coordinator before sending out his Sunflora and his new Kricketune. The two pokemon appear from there pokeballs surrounded by waves of swirling musical notes and staffs (the five lines musical notes are depicted on). Nando begins his performance with Sunflora using Grasswhistle and Kricketune using Sing. The two pokemon unleash a lovely melody of music among the crowd as Nando strums on his harp, sending out more musical notes into the air. When the performance ends, the two pokemon plus Nando receive a huge round of applause from the crowd for his wonderful musical symphony. As many more performances are made one after another, Dawn begins to psych herself up for her routine backstage.

A while later, its Dawn’s turn to perform. She throws out 2 pokeballs out onto the stage to release her Pachirisu and Piplup, showing the field in a gleaming display of beauty created by the confetti effect from her pokeballs. Pachirisu starts off with Sweet Kiss, releasing love hearts into the air, surrounding the field in them. Piplup then appeals with Bubblebeam, encasing each of the hearts in a dazzling bubble, creating an excellent appeal. To finish the performance off, Pachirisu and Piplup begin to charge up a Discharge and Whirlpool attack respectively. The sparks over electricity begin to rapidly fly from Pachirisu around the outside of the swirling vortex of water, creating a somewhat unique appeal. The two attacks then collide, finishing the appeal by flowing sparkles out throughout the stage as the judges all compliment Dawn on her performance. However back at Twinleaf Town, Dawn’s mother has just watched her daughter’s performance and has a disappointed and worried look on her face.

Next up with is dressed up in her contest for Jessalina (or something like that). She sends out her pokemon that she borrowed from James and like in previous contests, the two pokemon begin to take commands from Jessie. The two start off with a powerful display of Needle Arm attacks, Mime Jr obviously using Mimic to copy Cacnea. The two pokemon then quickly latch onto Jessie and begin tickling her as Jessie starts twirling around, forming a very strange and seemingly unappealing performance. The two pokemon then both unleash a Pin Missile attack, sending out a wave of missiles into the air. They soon collide, finishing Jessie’s performance off with a spectacular fireworks show. (If you asked me, Jessie’s performance was actually very cheap and wasn’t too impressive)

Next its Zoey’s turn and Dawn’s rival quickly runs onstage in her usual heroine costume, except only this time its blue. She sends out her Shellos and Glameow and the two begin their appeal with Shellos unleashing a barrage of Mud Bomb attacks. Glameow immediately jumps in the way of the Mud Bomb attacks and neutralizes them with its Iron Tail attack. Glameow then strikes with a Secret Power attack, lighting the field up in a paralyzing illumination. Glameow follows it up with Shadow Claw, striking the air and somehow transforming the light created from Secret Power into a dazzling rainbow colour. Shellos then fires a Water Pulse attack in the shape of a beam, surrounding Glameow in a swirling vortex. Glameow then fishes off the appeal with another Shadow Claw, slashing the water vortex into two straight down the middle, sending all the little water jets crashing into each other. With this, the field has become shrouded in sparkles and rainbows, giving Zoey a remarkable performance.

After all the first round performances have been completed, Ash and Brock head backstage to meet up with Dawn who is feeling very confident that she’ll make it to the next round. The two compliment Dawn on her performance just as Zoey walks over to the group. Suddenly the results of the first round begin to show up on a screen to signify who made it to the second round. As both Nando and Zoey appear in second and third place respectively, four more faces are shown meaning that there’s only one spot left in the second round. Both Dawn and Jessie look on eagerly, desperate to find out which one of them made it to the next round. In a sudden twist of fate, Jessie’s face appears on the screen as the last entry to the next round, shattering Dawn’s contest hopes.

Jessie tries to cheer Dawn up in a very selfish manner while still acting like she’d already won the whole contest, before receiving a congratulations from Dawn, surprising her. She then turns to her pokemon and apologizes to them, blaming herself for her loss and not them. Piplup tries to cheer its fallen trainer up but Dawn quickly snaps out at it in a moment of confusion, lashing back at it for trying to comfort her. Realizing what she just did, Dawn quickly runs off out the contest hall and to a high ledge overlooking Hearthome City, crying out in frustration and disgrace after feeling the pain of her loss.

As the second round progresses on, its shown that Jessie had lost to Nando in the semi-finals and Zoey has made it to the finals. Later in the dressing rooms, Dawn is getting ready to leave when Ash and Brock quickly rush over to her, exclaiming that Zoey and Nando have made it to the final round. The three immediately scurry over to the battlefield as the final battle in the Hearthome City Super Contest begins.

That night at the pokemon center, Ash and Brock are talking with Dawn’s mother on the visual phone. She says that Dawn will eventually get over her loss like a real coordinator should and that they’ve got nothing to worry about. Outside on the veranda, Zoey begins to retell the events that unfolded in her final battle with Nando. Its revealed that Zoey had lost against her opponent, now giving Nando 2 ribbons.

Dawn however is still sitting down, sulking over her early exit from the contest. Seeing her friend’s depressed state, Zoey immediately snaps at Dawn, telling her that a true coordinator is supposed to get straight back up from a loss and that she’ll never get better if she spends the whole day moping and sulky around. Hearing her, Dawn’s spirits quickly lighten up again, reviving her hope of becoming a top coordinator as Ash and Brock wander outside to see the two. As the night begins to get later and later, a flow of inspiration in determination rushes throughout her heart after learn one of the most valuable lessons of her life under that gleaming moonlight of the night.

She was for some reason dissapointed at her pokemon for losing so much therefore borrowed James'. It's actually a decent episode this. I might have another episode guide in at least a weeks time but don't count on it. I'll try and do one for next week's episode, Dawn's First Gym Battle!
