Ambipom

Ambipom is a handy evolution of Aipom. It boasts high speed and decent attack stats. It’s defenses are quite poor but with the wide movepool Ambipom’s been given, it easily makes up for them. There are also a few things that make Ambipom an interesting pokemon, allowing it to play more roles in a team as well as well as providing more options to it. Because of it high speed, Ambipom can be considered for one of those starting roles, going first in a battle. Overall Ambipom is a worth wild pokemon to use, being in the OU if well trained.

Rain Dancer

Item: Damp Rock/ Leftovers/ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
Nature: Timid/ Modest

Attacks:
Nasty Plot
Rain Dance
Thunder
Water Pulse

This set takes advantage of Ambipom’s Technician ability, powering up moves with a base power of 60 or less. Because of this, Water Pulse will be at a base power of 90 and it gets even more powered up by Rain Dance. Nasty Plot will basically double Ambipom’s low attack special power to something more impressive. Thunder is another one of those moves which benefits from Rain Dance now never missing. Timid is probably the better nature because Ambipom just wouldn’t be as much as a standout pokemon without it. A well-trained Ambipom with this nature can have around 400 special attack power after using one Nasty Plot so that’s still high. Not a bad set this, being simple but this set does involve a bit of risk having to get away both Nasty Plot and Rain Dance.

Physical Sweeper

Item: Life Orb/ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
Nature: Adamant/ Jolly

Attacks:
Return/ Double Hit
Aerial Ace
Thunder Wave/ Snatch
Brick Break/ Shadow Claw/ U-Turn

A physical sweeper version of Ambipom. Nothing much to explain here but again Ambipom makes good use of its special ability. Aerial Ace increases to 90 base power due to Technician while Thunder Wave and Snatch might present some problems for pokemon such as Gyarados who like to use Dragon Dance and Taunt. Unfortunately, all of its last moves are too strong in strength and don’t receive the boost from Technician. Brick Break takes care of other normal types as well as pokemon who resist its normal and flying attack. Shadow Claw takes care of the ever popular and dangerous Alakazam and Gengar while U-Turn is a tricky move to go up against. The interesting thing here is the choice of normal moves. Even with the Technician boost, Double Hit doesn’t quite reach the power Return however Double Hit can break through Substitutes while also causing damage, making it an attractive option. It depends whether you want power or strategy but Ambipom isn’t too bad as a physical sweeper. Just be wary that Ambipom isn’t like a Rhydon, a pokemon meant for causing massive amounts of damage with one attack. It’s more like a strategic pokemon.

Rating: 8/10

Special Sweeper

Item: Life Orb/ Leftovers/ Lum Berry
Ability: Technician
Nature: Timid/ Modest

Attacks:
Nasty Plot
Swift
Grass Knot
Thunderbolt/ Shadow Ball

Like the previous special sweeper, the key move here for Ambipom is Nasty Plot, doubling Ambipom’s special attack power. However it’s almost essential that you get two of them away to ensure that Ambipom stands a chance against tougher sweepers. Swift is its main damaging move, gaining the STAB as well as the boost from Technician. Grass Knot is interesting, depending on how heavy the foe it, Grass Knot might or might not gain the boost from Technician but it does take care of pokemon such as Golem. It’s finally move is just for type coverage. A pretty good special sweeper but like I said before, getting 2 Nasty Plot attacks away will make Ambipom more of a hope in battle.

Rating: 8/10

Baton Passer

Item: Petaya Berry/ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
Nature: Timid

Attacks:
Nasty Plot
Substitute/ Agility/ Thunder Wave/ Swift
Substitute/ Agility/ Thunder Wave/ Swift
Baton Pass

In the previous versions, Aipom was probably more suited for this role. Well I thought its just wouldn’t be right if this set was left out of Ambipom’s possible movesets. Nasty Plot this time is one of those moves which have the stat increase Baton Passed. Substitute might be handy to use to avoid Thunder Wave. Agility is for more of a stat increase but it really all depends on what pokemon you intend to Baton Pass to. If its like Alakazam or Slowbro, don’t bother putting in Agility but if its like Gardevior, go for it. Thunder Wave is just there to cause trouble but isn’t the best move to put into a vital slot and Swift is just for taking on others if Ambipom happens to be your last pokemon. Of course Baton Pass is essential in this set. Quite a basic Baton Passing pokemon, increase stats then switch.

Contests

Contest Type: Cute

Moves:
Nasty Plot
Baton Pass
Swift
Protect

Quite basic really, Nasty Plot will double your next round’s score. Most of the time you’ll end up going first so Swift will be your best move though. However if you don’t go first, try and choose the judge with the lowest voltage and use either Baton Pass or Protect. If lucky, you’ll get 4 points plus another 4. If you want to mix things up a bit, take the risk and use Baton Pass and protect every time, choosing the lowest voltage judge however this is risky and not advised. Sort of common and cheap if you want to say but it is quite successful this.

Rating: 8.5/10

Type:
Being a pure normal type pokemon has its advantages and disadvantages. Firstly, you’ll only have one weakness so that’s a plus. Also you get a resistance to ghost types moves which makes switching in all that much easier if you’re able to predict your opponents moves right. However being a pure normal pokemon means that your STAB can never be super effective against another opponent. Also you’re open to the ever-popular Brick Break attack, carried by many physical sweepers such as Salamence and Rhydon. Plus some new installments like Close Combat and Focus Blast make things a lot harder for Ambipom. And because of its low defenses, Ambipom is going to have a hard time going up against opposing sweepers such as Staraptor and Weavile. A good defensive steel type pokemon like Bronzong or Scizor stand good chances of beating Ambipom. Lucario would obviously be one of the prime choices with Aura Sphere and pokemon who can outrun Ambipom. Even though Ambipom has a good movepool, its offensive stats aren’t that greatly feared. Unless it charges up plenty of Nasty Plot attacks, there’s no real reason for those pokemon not to survive an attack from Ambipom. Other pokemon with Haze can easily disrupt Ambipom and some ghost pokemon can also bring Ambipom down easily. In saying this, Ambipom can have a lot of roles in a battle so don’t get too cocky when up against it.

Abilities:
Technician- This is obviously the better ability to have in competitive battles. As you can see, the movesets comprised here are all mainly based around Technician. This ability gives a x1.5 increase to moves with 60 or less power. This is why weaker moves such as Aerial Ace and Swift were possible choices.

Pick Up- This ability is almost completely useless in competitive battles. The only purpose the ability can serve in a battle is for suicidal reasons. But in the wild the ability is actually quite useful. If your pokemon is at a high enough level, you might find some TMs after a battle. This ability will not work if you have just had a battle with another human or at the Battle Tower.

I like Aipom... Not so crazy over Ambipom. Win me over. ;)

This, IMO, is just a waste evolution, but I'm a little glad that single-stage Aipom got an evolution. This is the big question I'm wondering: Will Ash's Aipom evolve into this mother? (Answer in spoiler, please.)

Remember how Ash's Aipom loved contests and Dawn's Buizel loved to battle. Well they were both traded over sot hat Ash got Buizel and Dawn got Aipom. Aipom then evolved into Ambipom but I don't think it's become a mother figure however Dawn is still trying to use it to its best potential. I can post more spoilers if you want.
