View Full Version : What's Wrong With May?

There's something I don't understand. Why do so many people hate May? Even though she's the female protagonist or the heroine replacing Misty, I don't get why some people go over bored and start saying stuff about her. It's really confusing and sad that people make such a huge deal over May and Misty. I know people aren't probably used to May at the start when she appeared but its still going on, its just so wierd and a bit scary. If someone knows why people hate May so badly, please tell me.
I think it was Max that brought upon May's downfall... Or the fact she does contests. Either way, May is a weak replacement for Misty, since her and Ash had a slight "thing" for each other.

True. I never really liked Max anyway. But I don't think that people should be making such a big fuss over her. Things change so they should just get over it. Personally I liked May mainly because she gets herself into more unpredictable situtations and she's got the thing with Drew.

Well, I see nothing wrong with may either, her certain innocence is a nice touch, something that I can't say misty had. Honestly, I have problems with dawn, but I liked both may and misty. Honestly, I'd like to get rid of dawn, and have both misty and may, so that its ash, brock, may, and misty.

Dawn's alright but not as good as May. Her personality is surprisingly different in the english version than the japanese version. They've made it seem like she's had experience in the pokemon world before but in the japanese version, she is still a bit nervous of things, innocent and just a bit more of a girly girl.
I think everyone was okay with May to begin with, but she's in WAY too many Pokemon movies with crappy roles. The Jirachi one was okay, with her song thing, but the others... no. The Manaphy one, I didn't like. The best part of that, IMO, was Buizel. :3 So cute.

I definately agree with you. Movie 9 was supposed to be "her" movie just like movie 6 was Max's. May didn't play any role of being a heroine. For once I'd like to see someone else as the hero instead of Ash. It did make her look useless didn't it, like she has to depend on others or something.
In the 10th movie, at least the creators made Dawn and Ash equally the heroes.
So true. Poor May. Ash saved the world again in the 9th movie.
Maybe someone needs to kill off Ash. Someone else to take the spotlight.

I personally don't like May. Mind you, this is from the viewpoint of a person who's seen the beginning of the English series of the beginning of the Hoenn Region episodes.
Well, honestly, May started the series in a terrible way. In the first episode, her bike is zapped because of Ash-if you notice, that's the same way Misty started off, and it automatically brought memories of Misty to my head. Now, not only did she bring Max with her (and Gawd, that kid is hecka annoying) but she tried to play off this good-girl, "I'm a new trainer and I don't know what I'm doing" act.
That was ok at first, but then she got annoying. She yells a lot. She pulls Brock's ear. She scolds Max. She likes the cute Pokemon. She's basically the normal girl, and that was boring. The only good thing she brought was the contests.
I really don't like MAy as you can tell.

True but that was pretty much sort of only in the beginning. Remember though May's attitude did change throughout the Houen series. At first she only wanted to travel and didn't care for pokemon and that's probably why she was a girly girl but she became more indipendant later esspecailly in the Battle Frontier series. Her father also didn't let her watch his gym battles so that would explain the lack of experience she had. I don't remember this much but didn't Misty yell a lot as well. I know Misty is sometimes called Tomboyish but she also does become like a girly girl as well. I just think that people weren't ready for the changea dnthat nobody likes Max.
I'm pretty sure that we can agree that Max dragged her status down.
Don't forget that Misty was the youngest of four sisters. She had an attention disorder, so yelling is normal. Her attitude was normal for someone like that.
May was ok, but Max was her downfall.
Dawn... Dawn? I blame Piplup. What beginning Pokemon knows Bubblebeam, Peck, Ice Beam, etc.? Seriously? And still loses some battles?

Things like that happen. Somehow Ash taught Pikachu Iron Tail without using a TM. Things like that happen randomly right now. Dawn is a bit like May, a beginner but a lot more enthusiastic about becoming a pokemon coordinator like her mum. Dawn is a lot more different in the english version than the original japanese version. She's a lot more innocent in the japanese version and a lot more beginner like. Dawn in the english version seems kinda cocky and sometime arrogant saying things that don't sound right. (It does fit the moment)
Spoilers: Ash is trying to teach Turtwig Energy Ball and is getting the hang of it.
Again, I blame Piplup for Dawn's attitude. Both of them seem to be brats in some way.

I have only seen a few Advanced episodes, but what I think the reason for the May hate is because of people who try to look "pure" as far as Pokemon goes and want to seem like they only like the old Pokemon show so they won't seem immature. I personally like them together, when they were together in...some episode. I forget which, though. I think they play off each other well. And...other things... *yuri fanfic writer* ;) But Max certainly didn't help anything. I like how she became a coordiantor instead of a gym leader or pokemon master. Made her kinda original.
Dawn...Eh. I've only seen the first episode and then some other episode with the stantler, so I don't know much about her, but she's cute. XP I like her character design more than May or Misty, really. I really want to watch more DP episodes to get a handle on her character for my fic.
Yuri Yaoi? Heh. I'm in. Haha!!
Yeah. Dawn is a little weird. She's so confindent at first, but then she makes a lot of beginner mistakes.
May is a little wierd. She made the mistakes too, but Max seemed to know everything.

Max was the annoying "I know everything!" kid that pissed me off.
I re-watched the first episode...I forgot how much I hate Dawn's voice. X_x All the Pokemon girls have annoying English voices. May had a dainty little-girl voice that, to me, was tolerable. Misty's reminded me of mine, which freaked me out. XP (Hey, I was ten at the time, give me a break. :D )
Alexi = Misty... that's a little funny. I'm gonna make a Bug banner for you. Haha!
Yeah. Have you seen the Japanese episode with Dawn? I liked her voice.

XP Yay! I once cosplayed as Misty for an anime convention about two years ago, just because of that. Just think the funny looks I got at that place. :D
I have yet to see many Pokemon episodes in Japanese, certainly not and DP eps. It seems most voices sound better in Japanese. XP Even Naruto's. XPXP

The japanese version of Dawn's voice is better. It sounds more like her personality enthusiastic and willing to become better without being a "know it all."
True. I just like it when they say Hikari. It sounded like Hickory. Haha!
I was thinking of cosplaying someone from Pokemon. All I've done was Growlithe, but I'm thinking of Harley. I doubt I could do any of the girls. Their clothes are ... yikes! Short shorts and mini skirts... Haha, no thanks.

Maybe try Kirlia. On a differnet topic, do you guys find Ash's vvoice really annoying in english now since the Diamond and Pearl series. He for some reason sounds different than he was in the Battle Frontier series. Maybe its because the voice actor is trying something dofferent or its the background music. It has a lot of effect on the situation. I just find the english version getting more and more dull because of the background music and some of the voices, how they don't match the characters.

You could always go old school and do either Sabrina or Erika. :) Wow, a lot of the Pokemon girls are scantily clad, aren't they? I can maybe see why Misty would do it - to compensate for not being pretty? - but why random girls like seventh gym leader in Sinnoh? (Can't remember her name...) She's a frickin ice leader, in a snowy town, and she's wearing a frickin miniskirt! Aigh.

Sabrina or Erika? ...Um, one is a creepy Psychic freak, and the other wears a komono... I could do Erika, just to get to wear a komono. :D Thanks. I'll have to work on it though. ><;; And Wal*Mart stupidly took away all the fabrics from its stores around here. Gah! Wish me luck. I may have to recruit my aunt into actually making it for me (I will buy all the crap and pay her.) I am going to MomoCon in March, since it's FREE!! I need a friend to be a grass Pokemon though. Fod Crammit!

It is a little different, but I always tell myself, puberty or something. Maybe he has a perma-cold or smokes off screen. Haha! It could be the "new" adventure making him talk like that.

XD I'd love to see Ash smoke in the show as he gets older. I mean, there's no surpervision around him; I can see him picking up the cigs. Make the show a lot more interesting. XP
Um, one is a creepy Psychic freak,
