Bullet Dawn finds out the next Pokemon Contest will in Solaceon Town.

The episode starts out on a hill, in the middle of the night, with a saddened James, having just given up Cacnea. Mime Jr. and Carnivine are in sync with James, while Jessie and Meowth try to talk to James, attempting to make him feel better. They even offer him some of the small amount of canned food they've acquired. However, James pays no attention and continues to cry.

The scene now switches to later on in the day. Ash, Dawn, Brock, and some of the Pokémon are watching a contest involving Kenny and Prinplup on a giant television. Buizel, however, is practicing his punches, not paying any attention to the television whatsoever. Aipom is hopping, excited to be watching the contest. Brock is making something to eat with Sudowoodo.

Zoey walks into the scene as Kenny wins the contest. Zoey and Dawn now exchange greetings, and the narrator explains what's going on. Zoey gets a weird look on her face when she notices Ash is lying down on a bench, being massaged by Brock's Happiny, just like Pikachu, who is getting a massage from Buneary, who has a major crush on Pikachu. Brock and Zoey have a light conversation while Brock continues to get the food ready.

Dawn looks at her ribbon case, and seems a bit sad, having only won one official ribbon since she started her journey. Piplup talks to her about it, and Ash encourages her, along with Pikachu, cheering her up.

On the television, we learn that a contest is going to occur soon in a town called Solaceon. Dawn, Zoey, and Ash all get excited over it. Dawn and Zoey are determined to win, while it appears Ash is plain excited to get to Solaceon. Dawn's Piplup and Buneary can't wait either, but Buizel is still practicing with his fists. Pachirisu is preoccupied with a berry. Brock puts the food on Pikachu's nose, and Pikachu licks a little, and is disgusted. He hands Ash a nacho to eat it with, and he slips it down his throat, also to be displeasured. The two of them run around the room in disgust. It seems Brock was making some sort of sauce or dip, and the two of them didn't enjoy the flavour. Dawn, Brock, Zoey, and the Pokémon watch, amused.

We now get to the next scene, in which Dawn and Zoey are having a practice battle. Dawn sends out Buizel against Zoey's Glameow. Ash encourages Dawn, telling her she can do it! Dawn thanks Ash, and Ash sends out Aipom and Chimchar to practice. We now know Ash has come a long way, as back in Kanto, Ash had chewed out a trainer named AJ for doing this exact thing to his Pokémon. Dawn and Zoey begin their battle.

Ash tries to get Aipom's attention, but Aipom is preoccupied with watching Dawn and Zoey's contest-style battle. Ash yells at Aipom, and Aipom remembers her own battle. Buizel starts practicing with his fists again. Aipom and Chimchar finally begin the battle. Buizel shows interest in Ash's battle, forgetting about his own, distracted in a similar way to Aipom's earlier distraction.

When Buizel's battle resumes, Buizel uses full force once again, against Glameow. Dawn explains to Buizel that he wasn't doing it right. Buizel seems saddened and displeased at the same time. After hearing Ash yell at his Pokémon, Buizel starts to watch Ash's battle once again in interest. Aipom starts using more combinations, and Ash has to yell at her again, stating that it's not a contest so she shouldn't act like it's one.

After the battles, Zoey suggests Ash and Dawn make an exchange, to their surprise. Brock seems to like the idea. Everyone seems astonished.

We now see Jessie and Meowth listening in, and they start plotting. The plan seems to be to pretend to be helping with the trade, and make a getaway with Buizel and Aipom, hoping it will cheer up James. James, Mime Jr., and Carnivine are still sad and none of them are paying any attention to Jessie and Meowth.

Zoey takes them to the Trade Center, and they watch two kids trade a Ponyta and a Munchlax. The group watches in interest. I want to note that the silhouette on the machine looked similar to a Rapidash, so the Ponyta must have been well raised. The kids are happy with their new Pokémon, and run off in separate directions. Nurse Joy asks if they're going to trade; Ash and Dawn slouch in sadness.

The situation is explained to Joy. During the conversation, Joy explains to Ash and Dawn the advantages of trading Pokémon. Ash decides it's a good idea, while Dawn is still pondering whether it's a good idea or not. Ash explains it's best, as Buizel can enter battles, and Aipom can enter contests. Dawn decides she likes the idea too, and Zoey congratulates her. Ash's idea is, before trading, to have practice battles. Ash will use Buizel against Brock and Sudowoodo, while Dawn faces Zoey and Glameow using Aipom. A disguised Jessie enters the battlefield, with Meowth and Wobbuffet, also both in disguise. They offer to help with the trade. Ash seems puzzled.

James now comes out, without a disguise, to tell Jessie and Meowth that he's feeling better. Ash notices, and yells at Team Rocket. Jessie and Meowth tell James to hush up and pretend he doesn't know them, humorously right in front of Ash, and they explain the plot. James says it's wonderful, and Jessie and Meowth jump on James to keep him quiet, ironically after they said all that in front of Ash. James starts crying again, and Team Rocket has a group hug. Ash and Dawn just watch, without a clue. James commands his Carnivine to attack, and Jessie sends out her Dustox and Seviper.

Team Rocket begins their attack on Team Twerp with Seviper using SmokeScreen. Ash sends out Staravia to blow the smoke away, revealing Team Rocket in their full glory. Team Rocket now says the motto. Carnivine grabs Sudowoodo and Seviper grabs Glameow. James starts to cry again, and he holds hands with Jessie. Ash has Buizel fight Team Rocket, while Dawn does the same with Aipom. Ash and Dawn are already perfect with their new Pokémon, and are able to take down Team Rocket without flaw, so they decide the trade is still on! Zoey and Brock are very glad to have their Pokémon back. Ash and Dawn say their goodbyes to their Pokémon.

Now back in the Trade Center, Ash and Dawn are ready to exchange. Suspense fills the room. Ash and Dawn pull the lever together, with sad looks on their faces, as they say goodbye. Ash and Dawn thank each other and they're excited to have new Pokémon! They send out the Buizel and Aipom, and they're happy to be with their new trainers. Pikachu and Piplup are happy, too! Buizel starts practicing his fists, as the episode ends.
