Ash, Dawn and Brock all arrive together at the Eterna City Gym for Ash's gym battle. There to greet them is the referee and her Nuzleaf. Everybody comments on the field, how there's an open plain as well as trees creating a jungle like scene with a field of grass in the middle. Gardenia suddenly steps in as Ash psyches himself up for the battle. Outside, Team Rocket are trying to hatch up another plan to catch Pikachu.
Back inside, the referee says the usual things, introducing Ash and Gardenia. She then explains that it'll be a three-on-three battle with the challenger only able to substitute Pokemon. Pikachu, Brock and Dawn cheer on Ash from the grandstands. With this, the battle begins with Ash sending out Turtwig and Gardenia using Cherubi. Turtwig makes the first move with Tackle but unlike its previous performance against Turtwig, Cherubi dodges the attack. Turtwig responds with Razor Leaf but Cherubi easily dodges those attacks as well with great speed. Gardenia then explains that because of the strong sunlight, Cherubi can use its Chlorophyll ability, doubling its speed, allowing it to easily dodge the attacks of Turtwig.
With this, Cherubi uses the sunlight and gets away a Solarbeam attack. Turtwig dodges and Ash starts thinking that it can hit Cherubi. Turtwig launches a Razor Leaf attack but Cherubi uses Solarbeam again, easily overpowering Razor Leaf and hitting Turtwig back. Cherubi then uses Magical Leaf but Ash pulls out his Pokeball. He just manages to call Turtwig back before the Magical Leaf attack is able to hit.
Meanwhile underground, Team Rocket is trying to dig into the gym. As they do this, the ground collapses and they fall into a tunnel with lights. A hiker comes along and for some reason Team Rocket starts to say their motto. When they're finished, they receive word from the hiker that they've fallen into the Shinou Underground, pack with treasure for them to dig up. Hearing this, Team Rocket rejoice wildly.
Back at the battle, Ash sends out his Staravia to take on Cherubi. Cherubi makes the first move with Solarbeam but Staravia dodges and uses Wing Attack, Using its speed, Cherubi is able to dodge the attack but is unable to quickly launch a Solarbeam attack. Gardenia looks up into the sky to see clouds blocking the sun. This though doesn't present itself as a huge problem and Cherubi fires a Magical Leaf attack. Knowing that it can't dodge the attack, Staravia flies higher and higher into the air. Eventually, the Magical Leaf attack becomes useless and breaks off.
Staravia is now high in the air, waiting to launch an attack. Gardenia tells her Pokemon to get ready and dodge when Staravia comes in but for a while, Staravia doesn't do anything, surprising everybody. Suddenly, Staravia busts out with a Wing Attack. The clouds have moved away and the sun is shining bright again. But, Cherubi looks directly at Staravia who has the sun right behind it. Cherubi is unable to keep its eyes on Staravia and closes them due to looking into the sun. With this, Cherubi is hit with a powerful Wing Attack. Cherubi bounces out of the dust created during the attack. Staravia bursts out of that dust and strikes Cherubi with Quick Attack. It then goes in with an Aerial Ace attack. It manages to hit Cherubi, knocking it back and rendering it unable to battle.
Gardenia calls her Pokemon back before complimenting Ash on his win. She then sends out her next Pokemon, Turtwig. Everybody looks at it nervously, remembering the last time Staravia went up against it. Not letting that happen again, Ash tells his Pokemon to use Wing Attack. Staravia flies in but funnily enough, like last time, Turtwig dodges the attack using its great speed. Staravia continues to attack Turtwig with Wing Attack but is unable to hit it (if you look closely, you can see that besides the change of background, the scenes are exactly the same as the ones when Staravia first took on Gardenia's Turtwig). Turtwig sways from sides to side, dodging Staravia's multiple Wing Attacks. Gardenia knows she has to do something else besides dodge. She then notices something looming up from behind Turtwig and before you know, Turtwig gets stuck between the two branches of a tree.
Taking this opportunity, Staravia pounds Turtwig with a powerful Aerial Ace attack, knocking the braches apart and Turtwig back. Staravia then charges in quickly for another Wing Attack. Turtwig though is able to recover and fire away a Leech Seed attack, hitting Staravia. The seed attaches itself on Staravia, spreading its vines around Staravia, sucking away its health. Turtwig then takes Staravia out with Tackle, knocking it back against a tree. Ash calls his Pokemon back before sending out his Turtwig. The stage is set for the two Turtwigs to go at each other, making the next match an exciting one.
Back in the Underground with the Hiker, Team Rocket are getting ready to dig up some spheres. They all start to hammer dirt away from a wall using pick axes. Suddenly, something falls down, causing the hiker to pick in up. He exclaims that it's a red sphere and hearing this, Team Rocket continues to dig wildly, knocking out heaps of red, blue and green spheres. The hiker though, goes around picking them up and putting them into a sack in a very suspicious way.
Back at the battle, Ash's Turtwig charges at its opponent with Tackle. The other Turtwig dodges and launches a powerful Leaf Storm attack. Ash's Turtwig runs up a tree and dodges the attack before leaping down and encircling Gardenia's Turtwig with great speed. It then attacks from behind with Tackle but Gardenia's Turtwig manages to sense it and fire a Leech Seed attack, hitting Ash's Turtwig. The Leech Seed attack starts sapping health from Turtwig (somehow since Leech isn't supposed to affect Grass-type Pokemon).
Seeing how it has the upper hand, Gardenia's Turtwig fires a Leaf Strom attack. Ash's Turtwig while using Synthesis dodges the attack, restoring its health before launching a Razor Leaf attack, hitting Gardenia's Turtwig and sending it flying back. Both Turtwig are okay and begin to charge at each other with Tackle. They both meet in the middle of the battlefield, colliding with great force and knocking each other back. The two stare off for a moment but Ash's Turtwig starts to stumble a bit but in the end, it's Gardenia's Turtwig who falls to the ground. The referee declares her Turtwig unable to battle and Ash's the winner. Gardenia compliments Ash on his battling skills but she says she won't give up. Ash's knows this but Turtwig has taken a lot of damage and continues to do so due to Leech Seed sapping away at its health.
Somewhere in the town, the Hiker along with Team Rocket are all above ground now. The Hiker has shouted Team Rocket to lunch consisting of noodles. The Hiker thanks Team Rocket for their help before leaving. Team Rocket are all eating up their meal and when finishing, James though realizes that the Hiker has left with all their spheres that they had dug up but after a word from Meowth, he returns back to a happy state.
Back at the gym, Gardenia sends out her final Pokemon, her Roserade. Turtwig makes the first move with Tackle, charging at Roserade. Roserade though simply responds with Grass Knot, tripping Turtwig over right in front of it. Roserade then jumps up before firing a fiery Weather Ball, taking Turtwig out.
Ash calls his Turtwig back as Brock starts explaining that since the sun is strong, Weather Ball turns into a fire type attack. Ash sends out his final Pokemon, Aipom but Aipom starts doing some kind of special entry, obviously still a bit excited for Pokemon contests. Aipom starts running at Roserade with Double Team, copying itself. Roserade uses Grass Knot, clearing all the copies of Aipom. Just as it seems that Aipom is going to trip over, the last fake is wiped out and the real one runs in behind it, leaping over the Grass Knot attack and striking Roserade with Focus Punch.
Roserade is okay and responds with a barrage of Magical Leaf attacks. Aipom leads the attacks crashing into a tree while swinging away using its tail like a monkey. Roserade though using its vine, reaches out to Aipom and bringing it crashing to the ground. It then uses Flash, blinding its eyes. Aipom quickly rushes in with Focus Punch but misses every attempt it has at hitting Roserade due to it being unable to see. Roserade then knocks it back with Magical Leaf.
Aipom quickly gets up and nervously starts swinging its two arms (not it giant hand on its tail but its actual arms). Ash though tells it not to panic and to listen carefully for the next attack Roserade uses. Roserade jumps up into the air again and launches a Weather Ball attack. The attack heads closer and closer for Aipom when suddenly Ash shouts out to Aipom to use Focus Punch. Aipom does so and surprisingly, knocks the Weather Ball attack right back at Roserade, surprising everybody who's watching.
Roserade gets up, still able to battle and fires a Magical Leaf attack. Aipom is able to see again and launches a Swift attack, intercepting the Magical Leaf attack and with more stars, creates a vortex using Swift, completely surrounding Roserade. Aipom then hits one of the stars, knocking it into the vortex, somehow directing the Swift attack to break and hit Roserade; something that you thought you'd only be able to see in a Pokemon contest. Finally, Aipom charges in and hits Roserade with a powerful Focus Punch attack, knocking Roserade through and tree and into the wall of the gym behind Gardenia. Roserade falls to the ground unable to battle and Ash is declared the winner. Ash runs onto the battlefield meeting up and hugging Aipom. Dawn and Brock both compliment Ash on a great battle.
That evening, Ash is presented with the Forest badge from Gardenia. Ash does his victory pose with his Pokemon as the sun sets on another day of fierce battling.
