Information: When Ash goes to Petalburg City to battle the Gym Leader, he meets a young boy named Max. Max says he recognizes Ash from the Johto League Finals and laughs at him for losing to Harrison. He says that Charizard put up a good battle and gives Ash a few strategies on how he could have won, causing Ash to be embarrassed since Max is a lot younger than him.
After asking Max who the Gym Leader of Petalburg City is, to Ash's surprise Max says that he is. Max challenges Ash to a 3 vs. 3 Pokemon battle, but Ash says he can't since he only has Pikachu. Max then refuses to battle Ash, which causes a big argument. Eventually, the rest of Max's family appears to reveal his charade.
After everyone introduces themselves, it is revealed that Norman, Max's father is really the Gym Leader. Ash challenges Norman to a practice battle, but ends up losing. Ash decides to train more before he comes back to battle Norman and goes to leave, but Max decides to join Ash and his sister, May. Max's parents agree and give Max a PokeNavi to help him with his journies.
Max is basically the navigator of the group, using his PokeNavi like Brock used his Guide Book back in Johto. Max may annoy Ash and his older sister at times, but he's a good kid who is going to be a great Pokemon trainer one day.
